On October 1st we had our annual BBQ at Coyote Point Park. Many look forward to this event as we can take it easy (after a light karate workout of course), with great food, drinks and conversation. It is the following Sunday after our annual test in September that many have worked very hard preparing for so it is great to have a fun event and relax.

The karate workout is basic punches, kicks and kata along with some very light sparring as we’re not wearing pads.

Unfortunately I forgot to take pictures of the best part which is the food! I’ll update this post if one of our members shares pictures but the food really is outstanding. We have a delicious ramen bar, and as a potluck a wide variety of other delicious food.

One of the traditions is a water gun fight which our younger members really enjoy and most of the older members avoid preferring adult beverages and good conversation. There is also a “suica wari” event where we blindfold the younger members, give them a bo (big stick) and yell out directions so they get close to the watermelon. Once in position they are told to stop and take a big swing hopefully hitting the watermelon.

This is a great event to kick off the holiday season and in two months we’ll have another with our holiday party in the beginning of December. I’ll definitely remember to take pictures of the food.
