OSU! We took a couple of pictures and videos of class today to to show what our adult class looks like. This is our 11:00 AM adult class held every Saturday morning.

Mokuso (meditation). We start every class by bowing to our grand-masters followed by a brief meditation session so we’re in the right frame of mind for practice the stretching.

Senpai Kenichi is in a sanchindachi stance with a side hammer fist (tetsui). Notice his toes are pointed inwards which can be a guard against a leg sweep.

Sensei Jill is in the kibadachi (horseback stance) with tetsui (hammer fist) and you see she has a strong hikite (pulls her other fist back). A strong hikite makes any punch more powerful.

This is zenkutsudachi (forward stance) with shutouke (knife hand block). In all of these forms we’ll move forward and backward to the same position concentrating on the correct stance and block. These will all come together when we do kata (forms).

Shutouke is also done from the kokutsudachi (back) stance. You’ll see the weight is resting on the back foot freeing up the front foot for a maegeri (front snap kick).

Zenkutsudachi (forward stance) with a junzuki (lead hand punch).

Class can consist of many different things. This one focused on correct stances and form. Class also often involves punching and hitting bags but every single time we will do light sparring at the end of class. The purpose is to put into practice what we are learning. Below is what that looks like.

Saturday morning light sparring.
